An Inspector, Oliver Akang has been detained by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command over the alleged murder of a farmer, Ini Charlie Umoh, from Ibong Otoro village in Abak Local Government Area of the state.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Odiko Ogbeche-Macdon, who disclosed this to Punch on Sunday, October 15, 2023, said the State Criminal Investigation Department was handling the case on the instructions of the state Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.

“The officer involved is still in custody and the matter is being handled at the State CID by the Deputy Commissioner on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police who ordered a diligent investigation. The command never kept mute and is open to addressing any pending issue,” the PPRO said.

Akang and five other policemen attached to the command’s Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cultism Unit were said to have stormed Asutan Street, Off Barracks Road, Uyo, the state capital on September 9, 2023, and shot sporadically.

It was gathered that during the raid, a bullet allegedly fired from Akang’s rife hit Charlie.

The policemen were said to have fled the scene after killing the father of four.

Earlier in an interview with the publication, the deceased’s sister, Esther, and his brother, Destiny, claimed that the state command offered them N1.2m and asked them to sign an undertaking to stop legal proceedings and keep the matter away from the media.

“But what we want now is justice. Our brother had four kids before he died and the oldest child is 10 years old. Now, there is no one to cater for the children as his wife is jobless,” Esther said.
