Bashir Ahmad who served as an assistant to former president Muhammadu Buhari on Digital Communications has condemned the coup in Niger Republic.

Recall that the residence and offices of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum was blocked off on Wednesday by members of the elite Presidential Guard.

A source close to Bazoum disclosed the development.

However, the reason for the act was unclear.

The landlocked West African state is one of the most unstable nations in the world, experiencing four coups since independence from France in 1960 as well as numerous other attempts on power.

Access was sealed off both to Bazoum’s official home and offices in the presidential complex in Niamey, although there was no abnormal military deployment or sounds of gunfire in the area, and traffic was normal, an AFP journalist saw

Bazoum, who was democratically elected in 2021, is a close ally of France

Reacting to the development via his Twitter handle, Ahmad called on all lovers of democracy and the African continent to strongly condemn the act.

He wrote “All lovers of democracy and Africa should strongly condemn the recent coup in Niger Republic. Democracy must be upheld, and the will of the people be respected. Let us all stand together for peace, stability, and the protection of democratic values in Africa and elsewhere.”
