Henry Onyekuru is eager to prove his fitness as he eyes a place in Nigeria squad ahead of the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Three days before Christmas, Onyekuru, while turning out for Anderlecht against his former club Eupen, suffered a knee injury.

The forward was ruled out of action for up to six months, thus, leaving his chances to don the Super Eagles’ jersey at the global showpiece in huge doubt.

But having returned to training earlier than expected, the Everton loanee is hoping to gatecrash Gernot Rohr’s plan for the tournament.

"I have to prove that I’m able and worthy to go and play – once I do that – it’s up to the manager [Gernot Rohr] to select the team," Onyekuru told BBC Sport.

"There is a lot of competition which is good. We have a strong team good enough to represent the country very well."

Prior to his injury, Onyekuru was one of Anderlecht’s best performers this season, sctuneg nine goals in 19 Belgian top-flight matches.
