Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has congratulated Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 general elections.

ONPOINTy reports that Vice-President Osinbajo lost the APC presidential ticket to Tinubu at the Special convention held at Eagle Square, Abuja, on Tuesday night.

Osinbajo, as well as former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and 11 other aspirants, had battled Tinubu for the APC ticket.

Tinubu had polled 1,271 votes to clinch the party’s ticket after seven other aspirants stepped down for him moments before the primary election commenced on Tuesday.

The Vice President came third with 235 votes behind Amaechi, who emerged in second place with 316 votes.

In a statement signed personally by him on Thursday, Osinbajo congratulated Tinubu for his victory, saying “his sterling contributions to our democracy and its progress stand him out.”

The Vice President said regardless of who each member of the party supported, it was time for all of them to rally around Tinubu “to ensure victory for our party in the 2023 elections”.

His full statement read: “I congratulate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory at our party primaries and his emergence as the Presidential Candidate and Flagbearer of our great party, the APC for the forthcoming 2023 Presidential Elections.

“I also congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari and all leaders of the APC for a successful Special Convention and Presidential Primary.

“For many decades, our Flagbearer has shown passion, patriotism, courage and determination in the cause of nation-building. His sterling contributions to our democracy and its progress stand him out. His wealth of experience will certainly be critical in our party’s continued efforts to attain a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.

“To all members of our great party, regardless of who you voted for at the primaries, we must now unite behind our Presidential Candidate and Flagbearer to ensure victory for our party in the 2023 elections.

“As true progressives, we must remain strong and united in pursuing our collective vision as a party toward building a country that can provide a decent life and livelihoods for all our people.”

In a related development, Amaechi has also congratulated Tinubu on his victory at the presidential primary election.

The former Minister in a statement hailed Tinubu for defeating his rivals (including him) to emerge the candidate of the party.

Pledging his support for Tinubu in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election, Amaechi said: “Congratulations on your well deserved victory at the APC presidential convention held on the 7th of June 2022, and extend my best wishes as you prepare for the 2023 presidential election.

”I am confident that your victory will re-energise the progressive ideals of our great party APC, buttressed by your mission of a common sense revolution which led to the defeat of PDP in the 2015 general elections.

”As you embark on this historic journey I wish to assure you of my commitment to your success at the polls in 2023 and ultimately look forward to providing the necessary support to ensure that we develop a prosperous country for all Nigerians.

“Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem.”
